We’re growing. Slowly but surely, we are growing!
I’m encouraged that our group is growing. It’s slow and steady growth, but growth none-the-less. Tonight we set a record with six of us in attendance. Two were new to the group and the other four were regulars. The newcomers expressed an interest in coming back, and I hope they do!
People are learning about us primarily through the website, but one of the newcomers was referred to us by a friend of his from another meeting, so maybe the flyer did some good. I’m sure they drew some interest because our website received three times more hits shortly after the flyers arrived at the groups.
A couple of weeks ago, we changed our meeting format a little bit. Because our meetings are typically pretty small, what we do is have each person speak for about four to five minutes and go around the room multiple times to give each person an opportunity to share two to three times. This achieves a few desired results; it prevents someone from holding the rest of us hostage with an overly long and rambling share, it helps the meeting flow at a quicker pace, and it creates more of a conversation among us.
I like how one person picks up on what another shares. Though we may start off with a reading or a topic, as we go around the room we end up finding the conversation going in a different direction all together.
So, I think we’re off to a pretty good start. We just need to keep reaching out to the newcomer and making ourselves known to the greater A.A. community. We already started that by listing our meeting at Central Office and mailing out the flyers. Our next step is to become involved in the A.A. service structure. That starts this Sunday when I attend our district meeting and introduce myself as the group GSR.
